Firebug is by far the best tool for this sort of thing. Maybe a bookmarklet is useful in situations where one doesn't have control over the browser (i.e. installing add-ons?)

I like to run Firefox as lean as possible (my work laptop has, like, 1 bit of memory. It pages to disk a lot) which means extensions disabled unless I really need them. XRAY is a nice quick alternative. Seriously, my work machine chugs just _running_ Firebug.
